How Web Index Website Marketing (web spidering) Works - A broad perspective

Updated: Oct 24, 2023

When you put a website online, search engines will need to send out "bots" and "crawlers" to find keywords that tell them what your page is about. Then it creates a tag for the web page and files it in the search engine's database. This process is called Index Web Marketing.

So the spider/crawlerscrawlers/bots/bots (HTML & text reading software) are sent out, crawl every web page out there, then stores it in the Web Index. Then based on Google ranking algorithms it will match user queries with results.

When you create your website, you also want those crawlers to crawl your web pages, tag them, and then Index them.

Process of Index Web Marketing

Web indexing, also known as web spidering or web crawling, is a fundamental process that search engines use to discover, analyze, and index web pages. Here's how it works:

1. Crawling Initiation:

  • Search engines start by selecting a list of web pages known as seed URLs. These can be popular websites, sitemaps, or pages from their existing index.

2. Spider (Web Crawler):

  • The search engine employs automated programs called web crawlers or spiders. These are responsible for visiting the seed URLs and following links from those pages to other pages on the web. Each spider can access multiple pages per visit.

3. Fetching Web Pages:

  • The spider sends HTTP requests to the web server hosting a webpage, asking for the page's content. When the server receives the request, it returns the HTML and other resources (such as images, scripts, and stylesheets) that make up the page.

4. Parsing HTML:

  • The search engine spider parses the HTML content of the page to extract text, links, and other relevant data. It identifies the page's title, headings, metadata, and content.

5. Follow Links:

  • The spider identifies and follows links on the page to other web pages. It creates a queue of URLs to visit, expanding its reach across the web.

6. Recursion:

  • The process is recursive, meaning that the spider keeps following links and visiting new pages. This allows it to explore deeper into the web and discover a vast number of pages.

7. Content Analysis:

  • The content of each page is analyzed to understand its relevance and quality. Keywords, metadata, and other signals are used to determine what the page is about and how it should be categorized.

8. Indexing:

  • The information gathered from crawling is stored in the search engine's index. This index is a massive database that allows the search engine to quickly retrieve relevant results for user queries.

9. Revisiting and Updating:

  • Search engines continuously revisit web pages, looking for changes, new content, or broken links. This ensures that their index is up-to-date and reflects the ever-changing nature of the web.

10. Ranking and Retrieval:

  • When a user enters a search query, the search engine retrieves and ranks relevant pages from its index based on various factors like content quality, keywords, and user experience. The most relevant results are then displayed to the user.

The entire process of web crawling is automated and takes place continuously to keep search engine indexes current and accurate. Web crawlers operate on a massive scale, visiting millions of web pages daily. This process is essential for the functionality of search engines and plays a crucial role in helping users find the information they seek on the web.
